I am exceptionally unskilled on the basketball court. Give me a baseball bat and I'm more likely to break someone's shins than to actually hit a ball. I could run a marathon...in two months, with lots of rest stops, and a Segway. So sports is not my thing. Nor is home repair, or computer programing, or anything involving science and explosions. But words...now there's a piece of equipment I know how to use. I made friends with words as a small child, reading books in the pokey branches of the tree in our back yard. Words have stood by me as I saw the differences between "creepy" and "horrific," realized that words like "delicious" and "affluent" had their own music, argued my way out of detention, realized that a few well-placed polysyllabic offerings in a resume gave me an edge over other candidates. I like to write. It is an art form, a mode of getting my (obnoxious) opinion across, a means of advocating for myself and others. As a writer, I have edited a magazine, published newsletters, wrote manuals on community education (in Spanish), crafted grant proposals, written short stories and poems.
What is your relationship with writing? Have you enjoyed it? Hated it? What is it about writing that you either enjoy...or that makes you want to hide under a desk whenever the looseleaf comes out?
Writing, to me, is a medium in which I may express thoughts, emotions, and ideas that I have trouble expressing using other mediums, such as through speech or music (though I am very talented when it comes to playing the guitar). It has been an enjoyable experience overall. Writing has assisted me in life; if I am accepted into UW Milwaukee, it is based on my writing alone, as, frankly, my grades aren't very good. Besides, writing makes me feel closer to my idol, cultural icon H.P. Lovecraft.
ReplyDeleteMy relationship with writing is fine. I do enjoy writing when it's about something I'm interested in, and it's very easy to write a paper. When I have to write about something I'm not interested in, well... that's a whole different story. When I was little I would always write my own stories. The one thing I really enjoy about writing is the fact that I can be creative and speak freely. I've only hated writing when it's for school. Cough cough the junior term paper. It's a bit difficult for me to write a paper about something I'm not interested in.
ReplyDeleteWriting is something I've always been good at. I write all the time. I have been writing since I was little and I believe I have improved over the years. I like writing because its one way to get feelings out whether they are good or bad. I guess another reason why I like writing is because I have always been good at it. I am actually excited to learn how to write better in this class so that I am more prepared for college when I would need to write a paper. I always want to get better at writing and I think Nicolet has really helped me in that area. From sophomore year, when we had to write speeches to last year, when we had to write the term paper. I believe I have improved a lot since first coming to Nicolet and I am excited to learn more and improve my writing skills.
ReplyDeleteIn the past, I have never really had a problem with writing. Before high school, I would only write when it was mandatory for school. As I got to high school, it turned out that writing is a skill needed for many different things in life. Throughout the past four years, I have started to write outside of school more, and it has helped me for the better.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy writing very much. I like the fact about writing is that you can get everything out on paper then you could with your mouth. Writing is so much easier to do then talking, but i only like writing about the things i want to write about. Sometimes when we get essays that are supposed to be about something i don't like or don't completely understand, then i hate writing about it. its hard to write about something you have no clue what your talking about, but otherwise writing is one of my favorite things to do.
ReplyDeleteWell me and writing is go but to a certain point. Like last year's turn paper was really hard for me because i didn't really know how to write as good as other and actually explain a lot of stuff in my own words. Im more a spoken person instead of writing but i know writing is very important in life because in college you will need to write a lot of papers and other stuff. If anything i'm more a free writer like whatever comes to my mind i write down. I write a lot but i don't explain the purpose of the work that is given to me and thats were i have a problem in writing. I've enjoyed writing when I'm thinking about stuff off of my head. I don't hate writing its just i'm sometimes bad at it because thats really not my skill level. Writing to me helps me express my self more and really get the detail of things that are going on in my life and thats why i like free writing because you get a better detail of someones life or anything that is going on with them
ReplyDeleteWriting....a word that describes me in a way that, is not only artistic but inspirational to others. It has been a way for me to express myself in many ways and from different perspectives. To me there is no such thing as the best writer; there are always other ways to become a better writer and I am always up for a challenge. Yes, I am a good writer, although there are always ways to improvise your writing skills. I have never really had a challenge in writing a paper, although like I said their are always ways to improve, because I know that I don't always get a A+on a writing assignment. But here is where I slowly begin to fall, I have a little trouble in the area I call grammer. It has not always been the most difficult but I do some what struggle to catch my grammer mistakes. But besides that I have never had an issue in writing a paper, it may not be my all time favorite topic to write about but I always seem to make it work.
ReplyDeleteI write to express myself in a way I may not be able to in normal speech. I can write my opinions. I can spill my mind of ideas, may they be good or bad. I can talk about controversial topics without being cut off or censored before I have finished speaking. I enjoy writing when there are no limitations or no requirements. Writing is self-expression, not cookie- cutter, write what I’m told to write expression.
ReplyDeleteI love writing because to me it lets me express my feelings. When you are writing you are able to get into more detail with your story which can help the audience connect more. I've enjoyed writing very much so because its just a time where you don't necessarily have to be perfect and you can just write and write until your fingers hurt.
ReplyDeleteI do have trouble speaking to people directly, especially people I don't know. I stumble on my words, get lost in thought and being shy really doesn't help. But writing...writing doesn't hold me back, I can completely express myself without any confusion. But then again, it's a lot more work.
ReplyDeleteScience sucks, Math is by far the worst subject invented, History a little better, now English/Writing is genius. Writing is genius for 1 unique reasons. What other class, or subject allows you to express yourself freely? If you took a look at my transcripts, i think it would teach you a lot about me. Straight A's and B's in my English classes, and nothing less. I love to write, I may not be the best at it, but i do think im good at it. Writing is a gift, i find it so interesting, to start a paper or essay, at the beginning i have no idea what to talk about, but after a little time, and creative thinking, a masterpiece has been created.
ReplyDeleteI beleive that writing is a great source for expressing the person inside of you. If you have trouble getting to others talking, you can always try writing to get your point across. With writing, ideas does not stop. You can go on and on with the power of writing.Only you yourself can stop your writing, but with widespread ideas, writing never ends.
ReplyDeleteI have a love-hate relationship with writing. Through writing I am able to release my thoughts; write the things I'm too afraid to say out loud, confront the fears that haunt my mind, and scribble down my inner most dreams. But the perfectionist in me causes writing to become a mental tug-of-war. Though I always have so much to say, I can never get through a sentence without the usual scratch, erase, and replace ritual. The critic inside my head changes writing from a therapeutic process, to an elongated and agonizing job. While the finished product is always in the end exactly what I wanted, I can surely deal without all of the persistent critiquing.
ReplyDeletewriting is important to me in everyday life either its class work and or texting. Through writing i can unleash the power of imagination and creative writing and mash them together to create a very interesting story. writing isn't just important to me, its important to everyone who picks up a pencil or typewriter or whatever you use for writing. Writers should never need to think about how to start writing a paper or essay, they just need to start writing and let his/her thoughts come together and let it unzip on the paper
ReplyDeleteI write because it's important and its used and everyday life. It also allows me to be more connected, creative, and express my feelings. Do you think there would be any religion w/o someone who wrote the holy books? Learning would be pointless if there wasn't any written word. Writing help us gain knowledge without writing everything will be misconstrued and history will be certainly told different from what actually happened.
